Welcome to the Street Twinning website!
This website documents the twinning of three streets and neighbourhoods across the world: Monte Sinai, a barrio (neighbourhood) in Esteli, Nicaragua, Dundas Place, a street in Port Phillip, Melbourne, Australia and Freedom Rd, a street in Walkley, Sheffield, UK.

This website has been designed and is managed by Roanna Heller, from Freedom Rd. We haven't got a website in Spanish yet, get in touch if you'd like to help us with the translation.

What is street twinning?
Street twinning is like town twinning but on a much more intimate scale. Residents of the three places get to know each other by organising twinning events such as street parties, exchanging greetings and gifts. This twinning project started in 2006 and we hope it will contiune to grow and develop over many years. We believe it is the first of it's kind, let us know if you've heard of any others. You can find out about what we got up to (workshops, fundraising events and three incredible parties) by going to the Monte Sinai, Dundas Place and Freedom Rd pages. Please tell us what you think! We also discovered some amazing coincidences and connections between the three places, you find out about these on the connections page.
Why?
We've all seen pictures or films of far way places, or even been on holiday around the world, but we often feel distant, noticing the cultural differences without seeing what we have in common. Street twinning is a fun way of making friends with people in another country and learning directly about their lives and culture. It is also a great way of meeting and getting to know the people who live closest to you. Streets don't just have to be for cars! They can be beautiful places for playing, chatting with your neighbours, gardening, watching wildlife and having a party. Organising a street party is a great way of building your local community and making your street come to life.
How?
You don't need a lot of money, just a bit of time and enthusiasm. Talk to your neighbours and find out if they would be interested in having a street party. Streets Alive! can give you lots of good advice about how to do this at www.streetparty.org.uk Find out about established twinning links your council might already have, or think about places which would be interesting to twin with. Talk to your neighbours at the party and take it from there!
There is more information about how this project was organised at the history page. If you would like some advice about street twinning email Roanna Heller at roanna@streettwinning.org.uk
