Freedom Rd
 | |
Freedom Rd is a long, steep road in Walkley, a hilly neighbourhood in Sheffield, a city built on seven hills. There are cherry trees on each side and plant pots in front of people’s houses so it is a very pleasant road to walk down (particularly in May when the cherry trees produce beautiful pink blossoms). The houses are terraced, in red brick or stone. Half way down the road on the left hand side is a community garden looked after by two residents, Helen Albans and Imogen Purslow. Until two years ago this was a piece of wasteland, but since then residents have started gardening there regularly, making flower beds and a wildflower meadow. Since 2004 we have used the garden for summer street parties and autumnal bonfire parties.
At the top of Freedom Rd there is the high street with shops and community buildings e.g. a bakery, greengrocers, flower shop, library, college, churches etc. At the bottom of the road is Walkley Primary School so the street is often busy with children. Freedom Rd is a friendly place to live. The residents are a mixture of families, students, older people and professional couples. Some of the residents were born and brought up around the area, but most have moved to Freedom Rd from other parts of Sheffield or England and some from other countries.
