Freedom Rd Party 2006
Here are two reports from the Freedom Road Street Twinning Party Have just got back home after a lovely time in Sheffield. Roanna did an
amazing job arranging this and despite terrible weather, there were plenty
of party goers. Thank goodness for gazebos! We laughed when we heard it had
rained in both Melbourne and Esteli...made us feel better I think!
The food was fantastic. One resident, Denis from France, even made Lamingtons! He found the recipe in book of international dishes! I did a display board of photos Roanna had taken off the internet and mounted together with information on the places. I was able to explain to residents how the twinning and the idea for the pinatas came about. The tram bashing was the highlight of the day and took place in the brief moment when it stopped pouring with rain. It kept the kids amused for ages. Thankfully no small children were hurt during this time! Here's to the next street party... Cara Sandys We had a wonderful party, thanks to the hard work of the residents and the determination not to let the rain put us off! As well as many residents enjoying the party we had visitors from other Walkley streets, Mexican dancers (who would have performed had it not rained!), representatives from the Sheffield Esteli Society, Issy's family (see Connections), Cara, the Dundas Place representative (see Connections) and a representative from SILC (Sheffield International Linking Committee). We were delighted with the decorations, the banner and the pinata. With everything strung up and the hard work of Helen, Imogen and Mike (our resident gardeners) the garden really did look a treat! The pinata took a lot of bashing, originally it was hung on a tree but fell down twice so eventually we used the step ladder. Luckily only one side was destroyed so we can keep it as evidence. The plant sale went really well (they didn't mind the rain) and the food and drink kept on arriving all afternoon - chilli, tortillas, cakes (including the famous Australian Lamingtons), Nicaraguan black beans, rice, strawberries, mexican chicken, and spicy potatos - yummy! It was satisfying to close the road and let childen play freely. Some excellent chalking was achieved, although it was limited by the rain. Krishna invited groups up to his studio at the top of the road to make clay tiles which will be fired and used in the garden. Roanna Heller Click here to download a short video of the street party.
